ASSIST Bubble Sheet Scanning - Troubleshooting

This article applies if you are using ASSIST for iPad to scan bubble sheets and it will not recognize or detect the sheets, or if scanning performance seems poor, or if you are getting many bubbles that can't be read. Please try the steps described below where applicable.


"Nothing is happening when I try to scan."

  1. Using version 1.2.25 of ASSIST for iPad?
    Some users report that this version can be sensitive to the distance between the iPad and the bubble sheets. Moving it closer to the sheets, so that the rectangle around the bubbles goes right to the edge of the screen, has been reported to be highly successful.

  2. Is your camera lens clean?
    Sometimes smudges or dirt on the camera lens can make the camera blurry. Cleaning it with a non-abrasive, slightly damp cloth can make all the difference!

  3. Got reflections or glare?
    Reflections off of lamination or printer ink can make areas of the sheet look very light - even white - to the camera. Move your scanning setup, turn off overhead lights, set the sheets up at an angle, or take other steps to eliminate reflections so that bubble sheet detail is consistently dark and easy-to-read as you look at it through the camera.

  4. Has your bubble sheet been altered in any way?
    Often we have users shrink or otherwise alter bubble sheets to save paper, or for other purposes. While this can sometimes work flawlessly, it makes camera quality, printer quality, and scanning environment far less forgiving, and is not recommended. And, any alteration to the proportions of the sheet can throw off the scanning algorithm.

  5. Are there extraneous markings on the sheet, especially around the QR code or the black rectangle that surrounds the bubbles?
    Extraneous markings can make a bubble sheet very hard to read because key visual elements of the sheet serve as "landmarks" for our software to recognize.

 

"Lots of the bubbles aren't being read."

  1. Got reflections or glare?
    Reflections off of the pencil lead, pen ink, or lamination can make areas of the sheet look very light - even white - to the camera. Move your scanning setup, turn off overhead lights, set the sheets up at an angle, or take other steps to eliminate reflections so that all filled-in bubbles and bubble sheet detail is consistently dark and easy-to-read as you look at it through the camera.

  2. Bubbles may be filled in too lightly or inconsistently?
    You may need to have students bubble more darkly and fill the bubbles in consistently. The same basic rules of scanning scantrons apply to our bubble sheets, except we allow a wide variety of stylus choices and aren't limited to No. 2 pencils.
